History:
Settlement at the lower end of the stream Rotte dates from at least 900. Around 1260 a dam was built at the present day Hoogstraat. This resulted in the name Rotterdam. On 7 June 1340 Rotterdam received city rights from count Willem IV of Holland. At the end of the 19th century the city grew very rapidly and became a very important port.
Rotterdam ‘The Gateway to Europe’, is the largest harbour in Europe and is the linking pin in the European economic community. The city and its surroundings is known through the centuries for the international outlook to the world. It cherishes a long tradition of unrestricted exchange of ideas. Recent developments show the ambitious image of the city. It offers an international atmosphere.
Transport
Rotterdam is very easy to reach with good connections to the Dutch railroad network and Schiphol and Rotterdam Airport. Rotterdam is very well known for the many festivals and sport events it organizes. It´s a great opportunity to plan your visit around on these festivals from yearly festivals like Formula 1 demonstrations, airplane races and dance parades till sport events like the Rotterdam Marathon, the CHIO and the World Port Tournament of baseball.
